2003 we the planet music & activism festival

The great outdoors: How do you measure success? At Julia Butterfly Hill's We the Planet event, all day Saturday in Golden Gate Park, singer Bonnie Raitt was joined onstage by Joan Baez, and later by Tracy Chapman, in front of a crowd of 10,000. But what really made organizers happy was that although a crowd of 10,000 normally requires 10 Dumpsters for nonrecyclable garbage, and in this case, the city -- recognizing that the crowd was environmentally aware -- had mandated only six, in the end only one quarter of one Dumpster was filled.
“Significantly, We The Planet was the largest public event in San Francisco to implement a full-scale composting and recycling program.”

2004 we the planet music & activism festival
"As a representative of the California Integrated Waste Management Board, I want to share my appreciation to We The Planet and Sustainable Life for introducing me to what a zero waste music festival would look like. We The Planet has raised the standard for future festivals and displayed what can be achieved when we set our goals high. Not only were the waste diversion efforts truly impressive but each eco-friendly program that was implemented created a sustainable picture of what might and can be. I was really impressed with all the sustainable programs that were implemented for the concert. Congratulations We The Planet!"

2002 & 2003 bioneers conference
Cybrena Everett, Bioneers Green Event Coordinator, was proof that one person can make a difference. After seeing the ironically high amounts of waste at environmental conferences, she started an organization called Sustainable Life. Today Sustainable Life works with organizations such as Circle of Life, the Berkeley Ecology Center and the Marin Conservation Corps to “green” these festivals by, among other things, setting up resource recovery stations and informing people about the growing need to recycle & compost.

2002 & 2003 Green Festival
But now the true-green test: what happens with the trash? Recycling at public events is a huge challenge. Even well-labeled bins and a presumably eco-minded audience are no guarantee for success as I noticed at a recent Earth Day fair.
Trash in hand, I approach one of the 7 resource recovery stations that Cybrena Everett of Sustainable Life and her Event Greening team have set up throughout the Concourse. The “Fantastic 3” bins, familiar among SF residents, are lined up: green for organics, blue for commingled recycling and black for trash.
But wait! There’s a crucial addition: a volunteer dedicated to just that recycling station. He jumps up as I approach. “That spoon is made from cornstarch and can be composted,” he educates me as he opens the green lid for my spoon, napkin and paper cup and reaches into the bin to recover a stray plastic water bottle from the organics.

Julia Butterfly Hill's 30th Birthday & Fundraiser
San Francisco Chronicle
Leah Garchik
Wednesday, February 25th, 2004
P.S.: Julia Butterfly Hill celebrated her 30th birthday by raising $132, 000 for the Circle of Life foundation at a fund-raiser last weekend at the Clif Bar Performing Arts Theatre in Berkeley. No disposable paper or plastic products were used, the cake was vegan; organizers were proudest of all that the event produced no trash.
Jam Cruise 1 & 2
greening jam cruise
Since our maiden voyage Jam Cruise has been mindful of our ecological footprint. Each year we have found new and creative ways to minimize our impact and educate our passengers. This program honors our interconnectedness to each other, the places we travel to and the planet on which we live.

“Your contribution to this project has been
immense. This wouldn’t be happening at all if it wasn’t for your
inspiration, experience, vision and your sheer faith in the
possibilities.”
